out the window a look I take
at dead elm trees and a frozen lake
beneath the ice the lives of fish
are slow and dark
as the dead elms bark
the trees are bare and the ground is
white
and the wind blows wild on this
powerful
night
I walk out the door to take a quick
look
but the wind blows it shut
and I here the latch hook
with out any choice I short cut the
lake
say "this is a chance I'm willing to
take"
not half way across the pressures
and
ridges
start popping and cracking
it gives me the shivers
I gather my courage but with the
next
step I take
I beneath the surface submerged in
the lake
there is something behind me
what it is I can't tell
but its big and its evil and I'm colder
than hell
A pike, just a fish, but a monstrous
one
cut and scared over Like it had been
though a war
this was a fish I had seen once
before
It appeared out of nowhere while I
was out spearing
"now the tables are turned" said the
voice I was hearing
I asked for no mercy I'll show you
the
same
this is my kind of fishing now you
are the game
