How to back braid rope.
braid1

This is twisted nylon rope. This will also work with hemp rope.
I tried to color code the ends to make it clear.
braid2
Decide how big a loop you want (or encircle a d-ring). At the point you want the end of
the loop loosen/untwist the rope.
braid3
Start twisting the loose strands back into the rope you loosened.
braid4
Showing more twisting back of the free strands into the loosened section of rope.
braid5
Each of the 3 strands pulled through the rope (loop around my left hand)
braid7
About half way through - I hope you can follow how each strand is twisted back into the rope.
braid10
About done - you can either burn the ends down or tuck them into the rope.
Make sure you do enough length to hold. I found for horse use you really need to
back braid 6-8 inches. For dog leads about 4 will do it.
