How to back braid rope.
This is twisted nylon rope. This will also work with hemp rope.
I tried to color code the ends to make it clear.

Decide how big a loop you want (or encircle a d-ring). At the point you
want the end of
the loop loosen/untwist the rope.

Start twisting the loose strands back into the rope you loosened.

Showing more twisting back of the free strands into the loosened
section of rope.

Each of the 3 strands pulled through the rope (loop around my left hand)

About half way through - I hope you can follow how each strand is
twisted back into the rope.

About done - you can either burn the ends down or tuck them into the
rope.
Make sure you do enough length to hold. I found for horse use you
really need to
back braid 6-8 inches. For dog leads about 4 will do it.
Roll rope splice back and forth to smooth and tighten back braid.
Done.
