It is recommended giving your horse a second West Nile shot in August.
I
attended Dr Halstead's lecture at the Stallion Expo in Lansing last
weekend
and he said last year there were 341 confirmed cases of West Nile in
Michigan. Most of the horses never were vaccinated, some where improperly
vaccinated (either didn't get second shot, too long of time between
first and
second shot or came down with disease right after shot, it takes 3
weeks for
the vaccine to take effect) and 5 of the cases had been vaccinated.
The
majority of the cases occurred the end of August and all of September
which
is why he recommends a second shot early August.
The meeting was adjourned 8:10.
