April 24 is the Neighborhood watch meeting at the Willis church.  They would like one or two of the ATMP members to attend.

Debby informed us there has been 3 wild dogs killing animals down by her on Torrey and a little ways up Bunton.  These dogs have killed ducks, turkeys, chickens, goats and rabbits.  One pit bull was killed and I heard recently they got the german shepard so that leaves a brindle pit bull.

At the Michigan Horse Council meeting they informed us the federal government is still trying to pass a law that we will have to call in and let them know 48 hours before taking our horses off our property and to let them know 48 hours before returning the horses to our property.  MHC along with the American Horse Council and all other states horse councils are fighting this. Other livestock is being made to report when they are being  moved to control diseases.  Horses have been included in this bill.

The deadline to place an article in the next township newsletter is August 15.

Lynn made a motion to adjourn at 7:55 with Allyson seconding it.  Sorry Henry someone else beat you too it.  Motion passed.

FYI    Do you know your horses favorite flavors?  According to a study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science and the Discovery web-site, when it comes to flavors horses prefer fenugreek(anyone know what this flavor is?), banana and cherry flavored feed.  While most commercial horse feed come in molasses, garlic, and mint flavors, horses in the study turned up their noses at garlic (I don’t blame them) flavored feeds unless there was nothing else available.  Horses in the study ranked their favorite flavors in the following order: fenugreek, banana, cherry, rosemary, cumin, carrot, peppermint and oregano.  And even though horses are often fed apples, in the study horses preferred bananas.  The horses rejected feeds laced with echinacea, coriander and nutmeg.  Previous studies found that horses like to smell coriander but that apparently does not translate into also eating it, the study found.  This is like how some people like the smell of coffee but do not like to drink it.

Old Business

Things went real well at the 4-H clinic we put on April 23.  Even with the bad weather there was 23 horses there and everyone did real well with their horses.

Henry and I attended the MHC meeting May 3.  Dr Steve Halstead talked about EIA, West Nile and upcoming horse ID program.  It was a real interesting talk.  We learned a few new things.  There has been a third positive EIA horse in Michigan.  All three have been put down.  The reason West Nile has slowed down is the birds have become immune to the disease so they haven't been spreading it as before.  He figures most of these birds will be dead by 2007 meaning there could be another epidemic around then.  The birds don't passed their immunity to their young.  It will be a few years before they get around have ID put on all horses.  Some of the ways being discussed is micro chips, freeze or hot iron brands or tattoos.  Micro chip alone may not work as not everyone will be able to afford a scanner.  Next MHC meeting is June 7 and the speaker will be from DNR.

Obstacle training is May 21 with set up at 10:00.  Training will start at 1:00.  Potluck and bonfire around 6:00, maybe a little later.  As usual there will be live music.  I haven't heard yet as to whether Scott was able to get a helicopter.

Bill is supposed to receive information from another group on an insurance company.  When he does we will discuss it at a meeting.

Debby is going to see about making a brochure on the ATMP.

New Business

We received a donation of $450 from Farm Bureau for the past three years we helped out at Project Red at Eastern Market.  I have sent a thank you.

There will not be a meeting in June as we don't have much going on.  The next meeting will be July 13 at Debby's house.

As usual we will be staffing the first aid tent at the 4-H Youth Show July 25 - 29.  Mark your calendars and let me know if you can help at any time.  The show runs each day from 8:00 am until after dark.  The more help there means I have more time to keep my club members on task getting their ready for their shows.

Henry made a motion to adjourn at 7:33.  Allyson seconded and the motion passed.

We have a post script to the meeting.  After it was over we realized we hadn't talked about the meat and paper products for the obstacle training.  Sally made a motion to use patrol funds to buy hamburger and hot dogs for the potluck and to pay for paper products.  Lynn seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

The rodeo went real smooth again this year. We had lots of rain
Saturday night but at least all three performances were dry. The
Zinzers were unable to make the usual donation this year.

St Joseph chicken broil was on September 10. Lewis and Bill rode around
while I used Desperado for leadline rides with Henry assisting me. We
had a good time again this year.

Still looking for insurance for the group. Any information you come
across let me know.

Just a reminder the first Tuesday of each month is the Michigan Horse
Council meeting in Lansing. Henry and I have been attending these
meetings and when Henry can't go Lewis has gone with me. Sally also
went a couple of times. Even though we can list only three names as
delegates any ATMP member is welcome to attend.

Bill, Allyson, Lewis and I rode our horses to the 911 ceremony on
September 9 at the township hall. Jim & Lynn Murphy attended also.
While there the fire chief asked for phone numbers for contact people
as there has been loose stock lately. They have needed help and in the
future will call to see about getting help from us.

New Business

The 4 ladies mentioned above visiting have requested to join the group.
Connie & Lewis are acting as their sponsors. Because of new members we
will be having a fall obstacle training October 15 starting at noon at
the Maynard's place. Set up will be 11:00. Any new ideas let us know.
We also will have to get shirts and jackets made. I have a couple of
saddle pads already made up.

Ideas for fund raisers were discussed with nothing being finalized. As
you can see from the amount we have in the bank we need to do something.
Some ideas were a Vegas night at the Washtenaw fairgrounds (Lewis will
get more info on this by the next meeting), Deb collecting cans at work
and Rachel said she'd see if she could get a donation from where she
works. More on this next month.

Elections were held with the following results. Debby coordinator, Lynn
assistant coordinator, Connie secretary, Shirley treasurer, Bill
training coordinator and Henry media coordinator.

Next meeting is October 11 and will be held at Henry's place.

Henry made a motion to adjourn at 8:10. Lewis and Bill seconded it. The
motion passed.

A little tidbit of information. The right saddle fit for riders.

Once you have found the right saddle for the job and you horse's
conformation, fine one that fits you as well. Saddle come in a wide
range of sizes that are determined by the distance between the interior
face of the pommel and the interior surface of the cantle. Seats are
measured in inches.
To be certain of the fit, sit in the saddle. There should be enough
room between the front of your thigh and the shoulder of the pommel to
fit the width of three fingers, about two and a half inches. The front
of your leg should not come in contact with the pommel. If it seems
like a tight fit, then its best to move up to the next sized seat. An
extra half an inch makes a big difference in comfort. But be careful to
not allow too much space, as this will promote instability.
The next area to check is the space between your seat and the cantle. A
vertical hand can measure for size by checking the width of the gap
between your back pockets and the cantle. When you are seated in the
center of the saddle, no part of your backside should touch the cantle.
When the saddle fits you, it optimizes the saddle's performance and the
rider's ability to get the most out of the horse. The right saddle goes
a long way to enhance safety and comfort.

Old Business

Lewis and Connie worked the Chili Cookoff October 1 at the Washtenaw Farm Council grounds.  It was a real easy job and we had a good time doing it.

Obstacle training was scheduled for October 15 but due to the illness that showed up among the Maynard’s horses it was postponed until October 29.  Set up time is 11:00 a m.  Be ready to ride by noon.  We also hope to do a search and rescue that day at Henry’s place.

We do need to work on a fundraiser as the treasury is real low.  One idea was a candy sale.

New Business

We were invited to take part in the presentation of the colors at the Novi Expo November 10 – 12.  As the arena is real small only one member from each group is allowed to ride.  Al needs to know who is doing this by November 1.

Milan Christmas parade is December 2 at 6:00 with the lineup at 5:00.  They encourage plenty of lights on the horses.  The Challengers 4-H club will be our pooper scoopers.

Dave Wak from the Ypsilanti Courier is working on a article about the group.  I have no idea when it will be published.

Next meeting will be November 8 at the Murphy’s house.   For the new members they live at 8796 McKean Rd.  Turn on McKean from Willis road and their house is the first on the left after you cross the railroad tracks.  Lewis and I won’t be at this meeting as we will be headed for Texas to take our daughter in law and grandson there to join our son.  Lewis IV will be home from Iraq by then. Anyone want to take minutes?

Lynn beat Henry calling for a motion to adjourn the meeting at 7:55.  Henry did second the motion.  The motion passed.

For the December meeting we have a potluck Christmas dinner which included families.  I’m mentioning this now as I won’t be at the next meeting.  The dinner can be at our place again this year.  Also you can decide if you want to do the gift exchange of $5 or less.  Also we’ve had the dinner the second Friday so everyone can stay longer.

I had a call tonight from the neighborhood watch coordinator to let us know they plan to patrol different areas of the township devil’s night Monday 30th.  If your going to be out either patrolling or if you see something you can call Kathleen McDonald at 734-461-1055 to let them know your out or want to report something.  Kathy is acting as the home base contact person.

Present were Henry Clay,  Bill Beach, Sally Altenbernt, Debbie Franks-Sieloff, Rachel Harmes, Kristi Troy, Lynn, Jim and Allyson Murphy.
The meeting was called to order by Deb at 7:08.
Henry made a motion to accepts October minutes as typed with Allyson seconding.   The motion passed.

Old Business

There was discussion about the obstacle training in October.  Talked about the reporter Dave Wak who was at the training.  He asked a lot of questions and for those who haven't seen the article it came out Nov 23.  Bill has extra copies and will bring them to the potluck.  Rachel and Kristi both felt the training was worth trying with their horses.  I thought the search and rescue went real well also.  I don't know if it was mentioned during the meeting or not.  We do need to keep up with the training for it also.

Spoke of fund raisers with nothing decided on.  Lynn knew of one selling tickets to a comedy club in Ann Arbor.

Christmas parade in Milan December 2.  LIneup is behind the lumber yard at 5:00.  So far I know Lewis, Allyson Rachel and Connie are planning on attending.  I think Kristi may make it.  To ride with the ATMP in the parade you have to use the horse you ride in training.   Lynn, Jim and Debby said they would scoop the poop and hand out candy.

Allyson made a motion to have a Christmas potluck at the Maynards December 8 at 6:00.  Henry seconded.  All voted for it.  Let Connie know what your bringing.  Please bring a main or side dish and a dessert.  The following have signed up :  Kristi - sweet & sour meatballs
Sally - cookies & broccoli with cheese
                                                Rachel - appetizers
                                                Allyson - cornbread dish
                                                 Lynn - cheezy potatoes
                                                 Maynards - ham & brownies
As anyone else lets me know what they plan to bring I will inform the members.  I will have paper products here but you'll need to bring your own drinks this year as the club doesn't have the money to supply drinks like usual.

Lynn made a motion to accept the $5 cap on gifts/ gags.  Bill seconded the motion.  It passed.  Remember while the potluck is open to family and friends if they want to be in the gift exchange they also have to bring one.

Lynn did the minutes for me as I was on my way to Texas. Thank you Lynn.   However I guess  the meeting is still going on as it wasn't adjourned.  That is what I call a long meeting.

Next meeting January 10.  Any volunteers?
